Audio assignment 2 - Soundscape
The soundscape begins on the coast of Florida, where the listener stands on a quiet beach. You can hear the ocean waves and soft wind, creating a calm and natural atmosphere. This setting gives a sense of openness before the main event begins. Soon, a countdown starts, a voice I recorded and processed myself using EQ, compression, and reverb to make it sound realistic and powerful, as if coming from a loudspeaker at a launch site.
As the countdown reaches zero, the rocket launches. The engine sound builds gradually, full of low frequencies and layered rumbles. Using panning automation, I made the rocket move from left to right, so it feels like it’s flying away and becoming more distant, with the volume slowly fading to match the distance.
Suddenly, human voices shout warnings like “watch out,” followed by a massive explosion. This marks the turning point of the story, where the rocket is attacked. The scene shifts into chaos as alien sounds, explosions, and fighter jets fill the stereo field. I used fast panning and volume automation to make it feel like objects are flying past the listener at high speed, giving the mix a strong sense of movement and space.
At one point, a loud nearby explosion causes a short deafening effect where the sound drops down to a muffled tone to simulate temporary hearing loss. After this, rocket debris begins to fall into the water close by while jets and alien sounds continue to clash in the background. Gradually, these layers fade out, and the tension resolves.
In the ending, only the wind and ocean remain. The calm ambience returns, symbolizing the end of the chaos and bringing the listener back to the peaceful beach where the story began. Throughout the process, I focused heavily on panning, dynamic contrast, and sound design to make the soundscape immersive and believable. I also applied several audio effects such as reverb, delay, EQ, and filters to create depth and realism. The fast rhythm of sounds in the middle contrasts with the stillness of the ending, giving the piece a clear structure from beginning to climax to resolution.
Reflection
I really enjoyed creating this soundscape because it allowed me to combine storytelling and sound design in a creative way. It was fun to experiment with movement, panning, and dynamic sounds to make the scene come to life. Recording and processing my own countdown and human voices made the project feel more personal and realistic. I also learned more about balancing different layers and using automation to create a sense of distance and motion. Overall, it was a rewarding project that helped me improve both my technical and creative skills while building something that feels cinematic and alive.
